What is detoxification’s role in addiction treatment?

Can you answer breana tb’s question about Addiction?:

I don’t really understand how things such as heroin detox work. I just got curious because I got wind of the news that an acquaintance of mine is considering undergoing this.

Addiction Feedback: Detoxification is a part of an effective addiction treatment or rehabilitation program. Heroin detoxification is comprised of three stages. The first stage is referred to as the medical stage. This is the stage wherein the body is being cleared of traces of narcotics. Then, the person will udnergo physical detoxification. This is when nutritionists and diet specialist will design a diet specifically for the patient in order for him to gain back his body’s healthy state. The last stage is emotional detoxification, a phase in which a sense of independence from the drug is inculcated upon the individual.
