Addiction Feedback: If you belong to a cult... errr... I mean AA it is a disease.

If you are a rational thinking individual it is an addiction. A miss under stood addiction. Scientific studies by unbiased groups have shown that the majority of people classified as "alcoholics" are in all actuality over indulgers and show no real form of addiction.

Don't get me wrong, alcoholism is real and dangerous. Over indulges is just childish behavior by adults acting as children.

EDIT:

The AMA recognizes it a disease... but it widely debated in the community as to whether it is or not.

Addiction Feedback: Both. I think that there are genes that predispose someone to alcohol addiction as well as other addictions. But it is their choice to try it in the first place. And it takes a lot of hard work and changes in thought patterns to beat it.

Addiction Feedback: Addiction treatment is a serious business. While you may get some useful answers from helpful people in a place like this, you need to check with medically qualified and experienced people.

You may find some help at Wikipedia - it may help point you to other places.

Laws are different in different parts of the world too.

Contact your local governmental health dept - or a local hospital.

Personal support is usually considered a good thing, if those people are not involved in the drug scene themselves - those who have 'dried out' often are helpful as they have been thru it themselves. There are many 'help organizations' of varying quality around - some even take the line of using 'Religion', Some ex-addicts as support.

Some treatments use just abstinence, while some methods use 'replacement drugs', some use a combination of approaches.

All methods do have a percentage failure rate - some people go thru the process more than once before they finally can stop falling back.

Addiction Feedback: The American Medical Association classifies it as a disease.
Based on family history, I can attest to the fact that is hereditary.
It's a terrible disease I wouldn't wish on anyone.

Addiction Feedback: Methadone is the most common, but is being replaced in many rehab programs because the street value is increasing and it can still give a euphoric effect. Another drug that has started to come into play is called LAAM and does not give the patient the euohoric effect of opium and so it does not have the abuse potential that methadone does. Buprenoriphen is also used in opiate maintenance recovery, but is more widely used as a detox mediation.
These medications are only part of a treatment plan though. There still needs to be counseling, education and group support systems like NA.

Addiction Feedback: Heroin detoxification, to ensure success, involves several components such as the acceptance and admittance on the part of the person affected that there is, indeed, a problem to be solved, and that the must enter a rehab center. The individual must be willing to avail professional medical help, and do whatever he can do be rehabilitated. It is common knowledge that a relapse can occur. Hence, both the patient, his family and friends, the physicians or other people concerned in the program must work as one to make the effort successful.
